BASEMENT: Schacke / Egotot / ÆON
STUDIO: DJ Saliva / adobeprincess / Como Se DJ
Schacke has firmly established themselves as one of BASEMENT’s most reliable artists, bringing a twisting, hypercolor energy to their techno sets. Schacke’s MO is to remain a moving target, fusing their myriad obsessions into a cohesive sound that queers and subverts the dominant paradigm of techno-as-power. Schacke lands with plenty of impact, but finds sources of energy in the unexpected, the plastic, the gaudy and the effusive. Egotot also returns. The German artist claims to make “impulsive techno,” but to our ears he sounds like he’s in complete control. A recently-released batch of DJ tools proves Egotot is right in the pocket, with each loopy wormhole building on the last, grabbing the listener with a tight, twitchy hookiness. Æon goes hard. The FLUX founder hits the ground running with a thick, rolling menace braided with a shimmering glimmer that can set the club off.
Herrensauna resident DJ Saliva returns to the club. The Arena Spa Superiora founder is a wildcard, with a prickly electro energy that gives their sets a riotous, knife’s edge tension. They split their time between Lisbon and Berlin, and the contrasting sensibilities of the two cities seem to have seeped into their music: on the one hand, there’s a grimy punkness reminiscent of the Portuguese capital, while on the other a technoid energy that draws on the mammoth sounds Berlin, and Herrensauna, have defined themselves by. adobeprincess makes her STUDIO debut, and it’s a natural fit. Her mixes course with a thick, coagulated chuggy energy, drawing on mutant electronica and sizzling, dark grooves that wind through floaty, effervescent textures. NY’s Como Se DJ keeps things slinky and loose. The Recess organizer has an elegant, even eerie finesse that oozes out of his mixes.
