Function / Amotik / Elle Dee / Succubass / Mutualism / Relaxer

July 28, 2023

BASEMENT: Function / Amotik / Elle Dee
STUDIO: Mutualism / Relaxer

Few artists thread the needle quite like Function does. He’s responsible for decades of exemplary, dyed-in-the-wool techno that has earned him lasting respect from the genre’s most hardcore devotees. At the same time, his sumptuous sound design and deft melodicism keeps him from getting stuck in the hermetic, insular world of DJs making music for DJs. To put it bluntly, Function’s music transcends. On his own Infrastructure New York label, he’s continued to plumb the depths, producing some of his most soaring and wide-open tracks to date. May’s “Green EP” shows him in full stride, matching previous career highs like his work with Sandwell District and the “Incubate” LP for Ostgut Ton. Berlin’s Amotik brings a teeth-gritting tension to his propulsive loop techno. Working within rigorous parameters, Amotik finds ample room to stretch out. His tracks can be spiraling, bleeping vortexes or cascading, cinematic rushes. But he always keeps his focus. Elle Dee plays for the second time this month. The Brazilian DJ’s specialty is roiling, deep and pulsating techno delivered with a smooth-but-tough energy.

Succubass is back. The Seattle DJ cut her teeth as a resident at High & Tight, one of the West Coast's most forward thinking parties. Since then, she's become a national concern, bringing her syruppy bangers and smooth roughness to many of the country's most essential parties. There's a swerving energy to her sets, which hold tight with a calm-but-firm grip before popping off. Mutualism firmly establishes herself as a STUDIO regular. The Buffalo artist has been making a name for herself as a resident of Buddy Buddy, the outstanding queer party that’s been steadily transforming nightlife in her hometown. Mutualism’s sets cruise and glide with joyous abandon, delivered with a charisma and confidence that cannot be ignored or denied. Relaxer is back as well. The Dripping co-founder tightens the screws with a punky edge and a bouncing energy. Drawing on his signature homebrew of unhinged, party-rocking energy, Relaxer’s sets mix wild, cathartic moments with the languid, florid and deep.
