■ FUNCTION ■ Cofounder of Infrastructure Records and Sandwell District, Ostgut Ton recording artist, former resident of both Berghain and the Limelight and an acclaimed producer: Function (aka David Sumner) is unquestionably one of techno’s most definitive artists. Originally from New York, his career has bridged the riotous intensity of Manhattan’s 1990s club scene with its more honed, linear counterpart in the UK and EU. Early connections with Regis’ Downwards records led to a collaboration that would give modern techno much of its form. Sleek, distilled and intense, Function’s sets seethe with the ominous sensuality that has spawned thousands of imitators but few peers.
■ NEWA ■ Having risen to prominence at Tbilisi’s Bassiani, Newa’s sound weaves a cutting edge intensity with a timeless musicality. Her productions for such essential labels as Semantica and Ben Klock’s own Klockworks highlight a subtle and controlled touch. A background in classical and jazz counterbalance the cold metallic tinge of her surfaces, and her sets build with an immersive intensity.
