BASEMENT: DJ Tool b2b Ezy / WTCHCRFT / Katie Rex
STUDIO: Jennifer Cardini / Analog Soul
BOUND celebrates six years with a lineup of outstanding underground voices who are helping to define the current state of electronic music today. Mala Junta co-founder DJ Tool goes b2b with Copenhagen’s Ezy, founder of the Endurance rave series and last seen at BASEMENT alongside the Fast Forward crew. They should get along fine; both veer towards higher tempos and explosive, throbbing power with an abundance of personality. “If there’s one thing we stand for,” says DJ Tool, “it’s underground club culture from deep down in our hearts”. It shows. NY’s WTCHCRFT matches their energy with his raw, acid-laced techno firestorms. A standout in NY’s new generation of renegades, WTCHCRFT brings a fearless, electrifying command to the booth. Katie Rex contributes an extra dose of paranoia to the night. Her sets just keep upping the ante. A recent recording in Miami shows her in full meltdown mode, unstoppable and unrelenting. Back home at BOUND, who knows where she’ll go.
Jennifer Cardini plays STUDIO for the first time. The Parisian sensation has built quite a following over the last fifteen years, moving from her hometown’s fertile scene into international prominence with a steady stride. Her intuitive fusion of techno, house, disco and electro speaks to her honed, musical sensibility. Her BBC Essential mix updates the lineage of chuggy, cosmic dance for the 21st century, with dark techno evocations sitting seamlessly beside twinkling, cinematic arpeggiations and Moroder-esque bass lines. But Cardini is hardly limited to one lane, and her live appearances push tempos up as needed, mixing anthemic moments with heady, underground explorations. Brooklyn’s Analog Soul have a similar ethos. The duo is rooted in NY’s bygone golden era of record stores, where they learned their trade and crossed paths with many of the greats. This history shows in their DJ sets, which are infused with an authority, wide palette and firm command that can only come with time. Not many DJs in the city can spin classic Detroit techno, deep early 2000s cuts and hot-off-the-presses bombs with the cohesion and grace of Analog Soul.
