BASEMENT ANNIVERSARY: Freddy K / Beatrice / Lydo / Jek / Matas / Mutualism / Cosmo

May 6, 2023

BASEMENT: Freddy K / Beatrice / Lydo
STUDIO: Jek / Matas / Mutualism / Cosmo

BASEMENT celebrates its anniversary with a serious crew. Freddy K is a name synonymous with excellence: the Italian DJ has been an active force in the underground since the early ‘90s. As the founder of KEY vinyl, he is a purist of the highest order. His vinyl-heavy sets draw from all epochs and he carefully curates a pounding, undiluted sound that hews to the genre’s roots. Residents Beatrice and Lydo take the controls for the rest of the night. Beatrice represents Europe’s younger generation; the Spanish artist has quickly carved out a space for herself playing spacious, tense and evocative techno with a refreshing flair for impact. Lydo has helped to set the standard in NY. From the beginning, they’ve always made an impression. But in recent years, Lydo’s sound has grown richer and more mutable, showing an impressive range that can carry the energy at any time without sacrificing their artistic vision.

Repeat offenders Jek and Matas grab the reins at STUDIO. Jek has become a regular presence at BASEMENT, working both rooms with an effortless command. His sense of propulsive groove and trippy spaciousness creates a throughline that connects his sets, whether he dives into more varied sounds or sticks to incandescent bangers. Matas bridges heavy, bass-laden depth and skipping syncopations with lean, driving four-on-the-floor momentum. Mutualism makes her return. The Buffalo, NY artist and Buddy Buddy resident is on a bit of a tear, bringing down the house at every turn with explosive and fizzy sets. Loaded with color and brimming with expressive elan, Mutualism brings out the best in any room. Cosmo joins the lineup. The NY artist keeps it timeless, with an essential house sound that wiggles and grooves with a wide open point of view.
