BASEMENT: Dustin Zahn / Lennart Wiehe / Justin Cudmore
STUDIO: Beige / SPRKLBB
After a few months off, Balance is back for its summer edition. American-born, Berlin-based polymath Dustin Zahn headlines. The Enemy records founder is a paragon of heavy and hypnotic techno. He’s an exceptional DJ, pulling from a seemingly-limitless well of roiling, determined atmospheric loop techno and mixing with a finesse that comes only to the most dedicated artists. In addition to his label curation, Zahn is a co-founder of The Great Beyond, Minnesota’s premier techno festival. In a crowded field, Zhan is showing a complete, unflinching dedication to electronic music’s most essential aspects. Lennart Wiehe represents the dirt-caked and delirious. The German DJ brings an organic, even mutated energy to his productions, which harken back to the Hague’s Bunker Records and the more recent US tech-noise underground. But Wiehe has a graceful touch that sets him apart; for all their menace, his tracks have an undeniable allure. Justin Cudmore fills out the lineup. His work completes the trifecta; he has strong ties to the staunch, rooted sounds of classic American techno while also drawing on a saucy, nimble energy. Where others see pared-back linearity as an excuse to do less, Cudmore rides tight, swinging grooves with an intuitively nasty flair. He’s a lil’ freak, plain and simple.
Beige lands at STUDIO for the first time. The Detroit artist is beloved for their wild rides through, in their own words, “just the hits.” A Beige set is a rich infusion of color and no-holds-barred, all out life-giving energy. Their itinerary has seen them making regular stops at many of the country’s most essential parties, and establishing themselves as an artist of renown on the international stage. Whether pulling from the classics or a trove of obscure treasures, Beige always brings a personal stamp to their mixes. SPRKLBB also makes his debut at the club. The NY mainstay has a flair for the dramatic, with a swerving flow that careens from one euphoric peak to the next. Riding high on a vinyl-heavy catalog, SPRKLBB can balance warm, gooey loop tracks, delirious r&b and cataclysmic club moments with an intuitive ease.
