BASEMENT: Ancient Methods / Schwefelgelb / Philipp Strobel
STUDIO: DJ Wawa / Honey Bun
Berlin’s aufnahme + wiedergabe returns to Basement, following their standout takeover in April. Ancient Methods makes a repeat appearance, and with good reason. Few artists summon the snarling power and infernal intensity he does. Stark, distilled techno is married with oily industrial grit and dirt-caked shards of noise. Having emerged fully formed in 2007 with “First Method,” the intervening years have seen him fulfill his early promise, and then some. His most recent releases burn with an unstoppable energy while at times veering into anthem territory. Berlin duo Schwefelgelb will keep up just fine. Evoking the dankest subterranean sounds, EPs like Dahinter Das Gesicht call back to the harder edges of EBM and rave. But they also go full-techno, with blasted, hammering kick drums and twitchy paranoid atmospheres. aufnahme + wiedergabe founder Philipp Stroebel fills out the lineup. The Endorcism founder brings out the heavy goth/wave rarities, playing with a seasoned touch and a curator’s conviction.
DJ Wawa and Honey Bun take over STUDIO. Wawa has been a staunch member of the NY community for years. His sound often drifts through languidly expressive house iterations, filled with rich pads, cooing vocals and thick, low-key basslines. His 2020 EP “What It Means” on Sorry Records encapsulates the various threads that weave through his sets: fast but tender, hectic but chill, soulful and tough. Honey Bun similarly vibes things out. Her Buntopia show on the Lot Radio is a showcase of profound chill, deep meditation and heavy, heady dancefloor energy. As laid back as she is, Honey Bun also knows when to pump the gas, giving the dancers more than enough juice.
