BASEMENT: aufnahme + wiedergabe night: Ancient Methods / Philipp Strobel / Motive-A
STUDIO: Carlos Souffront / Galcher Lustwerk / Rose Kourts
Philipp Strobel’s aufnahme + wiedergabe returns from Berlin. Once again, Ancient Methods headlines. A rare talent, his unique fusion of techno, EBM and industrial is truly on another level: he pulls the best from each genre and makes something more than the sum of its parts. Check his “Der Schmied” for aufnahme for a perfect example. Guttural vocals suggest the barren landscapes of black metal, while the throbbing bassline and stepping drum pattern feel retrofitted from a classic Wax Trax! release. Yet the whole thing feels perfectly constructed for techno clubs, with cutting edge production and a track-y pacing. For some DJs, this would be a peak time moment, but for Ancient Methods, it’s like that the whole time. Label founder Philipp Strobel exemplifies the core aesthetic of the project: subterranean goth bangers meld with stomping, uncompromising techno. Painted in streaks of gray, Strobel’s sets find catharsis in starkness. Motiv-A is a New York producer with ties to the similarly-minded Lost Souls crew. Rooted in the tech-noise underground but always evolving, she’s a perfect fit for the night.
Carlos Souffront steps up in STUDIO. The Detroit DJ has been touted by his peers for years, with regular appearances at The Bunker and No Way Back and breathless accounts of his extended sets. Known for his perhaps comprehensive knowledge of all things acid, Souffrant draws from the depths and stretches his sets out like taffy. He’s a DJ who seems to be able to make anything - really, anything - work. Galcher Lustwerk first appeared with the 100% Galcher mixtape back in 2013. It was an enigma, with simple house beats, drowsy rapping and not much else. With those few elements though, Lustwerk was able to create a world that felt completely fresh and familiar at the same time. Since then, he’s continued to develop his sound largely in his own lane, with standout albums for Ghostly Intl. Last year, they issued the tracks as a full double LP for the first time, and Lustwerk’s timelessness has never been more apparent. Rose Kourts completes the lineup. An unflappably soulful presence, her recent rise felt like a foregone conclusion to anyone watching closely.
